I'm a foodie. I'm a fan of dogs. I like sports on the weekend. I like beer. I like camping. Like many of my colleagues, I love technology. I live in Beijing but I'm often in Singapore for the same reason I live in Beijing: I work and enjoy being there. On a recent trip to Singapore, as I read through gadget chatter on the Web, I discovered a soon-to-be-released mobile phone, still unavailable in all but two places in the world. I also discovered that for one day, at an annual tech fair in Malaysia, I would be only a few hundred kilometers from obtaining one of these new devices. Seven hours later, I made my way by train, cab, and bicycle to Malacca, Malaysia, where I gained possession of my desired device. By 4am the very next day, I was on my way to Kuala Lumpur for a flight back to Singapore, just in time for a Sunday business meeting, the coolest kid on the block. Sure, I made that trip because of a phone. I also made that trip because of what I might, and did, find: great food, a few local canines, some random street soccer, cold beers, dinner at a restaurant that felt something like camping, and of course, a very cool bit of technology incarnate.
